Let's face it - bottled water is convenient. If you're on the road or eating out, bottled water is refreshing, healthy and easy to use. But if you're at home or the office, filtered water from a cooler or a refrigerator is a lot cheaper and better for the environment because you're not creating more plastic waste with every drink. Most offices in America provider water coolers for their employees, not bottled water. It's cheaper and doesn't generate as much trash. So why can't Congress do what most companies in America do? News reports have noted that the House of Representatives spent $190,000 of taxpayer money in the first quarter of 2010 (just three months!!) on bottled water. That's a whole lot of money for water.
On January 5th, George S. Hawkins, general manager of the area water utility DC Water, wrote House Speaker John Boehner a letter offering to supply each member of Congress with his or her own reusable water bottle (for free!). Change.org is pushing the idea with an online petition.
If you think there are better uses for $200k each quarter than bottled water, please sign this petition:
