Fun Ideas for Halloween Pumpkins

I love carving pumpkins with my kids. Each year we go to a local pumpkin farm and pick out pumpkins for everyone in the family and then find some cool pumpkin carving templates to create great looking witches and ghosts and bats and other creepy Halloween images. My kids start out very excited with the process, but they usually get bored before all the carving is done, and I'm left to scoop out all the pumpkin guts and finish creating whatever they've started.

This is probably understandable, since my youngest is 5 and my oldest is 10, and he has a hard time carving intricate designs on the pumpkins. So this year I've started looking for some fun no-carve pumpkin ideas. For my littlest one, I think I'm going to get her a set of Mr. Potato Head pumpkin pieces. They make some cute sets, including a silly purple vampire that I think she'll like.

My oldest one no longer thinks Mr. Potato Head is cool, so I'm thinking about getting one or more pumpkin holders that will not only hold the jack-o-lanterns, but also turn them into a spooky skeleton. He can carve a face on the pumpkin, and then we simply put it on top of the pumpkin stand to make a skeleton.

I've also seen some very cute ideas to create pumpkin people and creatures using multiple pumpkins stacked or placed together. These still require a little bit more work than simply sticking Mr. Potato Head pieces into the pumpkin, but they don't require the dexterity of carving with a knife.

Pumpkin carving is fun, but I'm glad for a variety of options that make it easier to enjoy it with my kids.
