Best and Worst Places to Be a Woman
"The Independent" newspaper has a fascinating article about the status of women in the world today. I was amazed by some of the statistics, most notably that Rwanda (Rwanda!!) is the country with the greatest percentage of female politicians. It is the only country in the world where women hold the majority of parliamentary seats. Rwanda!! This is the same poor country in Africa where about 1 million people (out of population of just over 11 million, mind you) were killed during a 100-day genocide in the 1990s. That's amazing.
I had to jump over to Wikipedia after reading "The Independent" article and was amazed in a good way to read this: During the 2000s Rwanda's economy and tourist numbers grew rapidly, and the country's Human Development Index grew by 3.3% per year, the largest increase of any country. Good for Rwanda!
Other fascinating facts from the article:
- Thailand has the greatest percentage of women in senior management (45 per cent).
- In Qatar six women are enrolled in tertiary education for every man.
- New Delhi is the best place for women wanting to break into the male-dominated world of taxi drivers.
- Jamaica has the highest ratio of women in high-skilled jobs, such as legislators, senior officials and managers. Almost 60 per cent of these roles are filled by women.
Those of us living in "modern" western countries might want to take note of these stats. You've come a long way, baby, but there's still a ways to go.
